Glossary of Terms
Embossing
Tactile feature with a logo or other design stamped or molded on envelope exterior
Grooving
Tactile feature creating “grooves” on envelope exterior; may be vertical or horizontal
Peel & Seal
Envelope with hot/cold melt adhesive; peel off the paper strip, then press the flap down to seal
Flip & Stick
A type of latex seal with an additional lower flap to “flip” up, then press top flap down to “stick,” or seal
Banding
Thin band that holds multiple envelopes together; minimum of 4 envelopes required for a band
Perforations
Cuts or holes that make it easy to tear a section away from the envelope
Zippers
A type of perforation with zipper pattern and pull tab; size and style may be customized
Pull Tab
Removable tab on envelope face that’s peeled back to open envelope (zipper and perforation all in one)
Bangtail
Envelope with a separate coupon or other announcement attached with a perforation
Triple Window
Three stacked envelope windows; placement and size customized per order
Double Patch
Two non-stacked envelope windows, such as top and bottom of opposite sides
Single Patch
Two envelope windows stacked on top of each other, using a single film patch
Inside Tint
Interior security feature to conceal an envelope’s contents; can be customized with company logo or other designs
Full-View Window
Window opening across the entire envelope front
Shape Cuts/Complete Cuts
A shape that varies from the standard envelope sizes, such as a triangled or rounded end
Pockets/Poly Pockets
Envelope with interior pocket for mailing inserts
Diagonal Seam
Exterior seams folded diagonally across envelope back
Open Side
Booklet-style envelope with opening along the long end
Open End
Catalog-style envelope with opening along the short end
Outside Side Seam
Envelope with seams folded on the exterior; ideal for inserting return-mail envelopes
