Acquisition of Atlanta-Area Wilkerson Packaging Co.

Deal is aligned with Mac Papers’ proven commitment to further expanding its established packaging program

Jacksonville, FL (July 30, 2018) – Mac Papers, one of the largest merchant distributors in the Southeast U.S., announced today that on Friday, July 27, it completed the acquisition of Wilkerson Packaging Co., an Atlanta-based packaging and facility supplies distribution business established in 1982.

“Mac Papers is pleased that Paul Wilkerson entrusted us with the solid packaging business Paul and his team have built,” stated Mac Papers President Sutton McGehee. “This acquisition reflects our commitment to offering a broad, diversified product lineup from best-in-class suppliers, and continuing to grow the packaging business alongside our paper and print, facility supplies and office products segments.”

Chris McCabe, Mac Papers’ vice president of packaging, echoed McGehee’s statements, adding that the acquisition represents an excellent addition to the company’s established packaging business. “The Wilkerson acquisition is aligned with our proven commitment to continue to expand our packaging program and further positions Mac Papers as the go-to packaging and facility supplies distribution partner in the Southeast,” explained McCabe. “We are excited to build upon Wilkerson’s experience and expertise with an even stronger packaging offering, complemented by our deep local inventories, relationships with top suppliers, value-added services and solutions, and comprehensive product line that includes our Castle™ brand of carton sealing tapes and stretch films.”

The facility operated by Wilkerson, located at 325 Great Southwest Parkway in Atlanta, is no longer in service. Mac Papers is serving Wilkerson customers from its Atlanta branch at 460 Riverside Parkway, located just a few miles from the former Wilkerson facility.

“We are delighted to welcome Wilkerson employees to the Mac Papers team,” stated McGehee. “And we are pleased that Paul Wilkerson is staying on with Mac Papers to help ensure a smooth transition for Wilkerson customers and suppliers.”

The Wilkerson acquisition is the most recent in a long line of packaging acquisitions Mac Papers has made over the past six years. In 2016, the company acquired Birmingham-based packaging company Higdon Paper and Packaging. One year prior, Mac Papers acquired two Nashville-based packaging companies (Boxes Etc. II and Packaging Professionals) and in 2013 it purchased Alles Inc., a full-scale distributor of packaging products, systems and services out of Hialeah, Florida. In December 2012, the company acquired All Packaging Supplies, a distributor of industrial and food service packaging supplies located in Pembroke Park, Florida.

Incorporating Inkjet into Your Wide-Format Print Strategy

The paper experts at Mac Papers understand that digital printing, especially production inkjet, is a dynamic and growing market and compatible papers, inks and software are rapidly evolving to keep pace. That’s why our team members continue to hone their digital knowledge, including training at our branch locations with experts from Canon Solutions America and Domtar.

“Our goal is to educate the Mac Papers team on the capabilities of today’s latest production inkjet technology and its impact on this rapidly growing print market,” said Lucy Perez-Sierra, senior marketing specialist for media at Canon Solutions America. “This collaboration with Mac Papers improves our ability to provide our joint customers with a wide variety of media types for printing diverse applications.”

As interest in digital printing and production inkjet accelerates, investment in the latest equipment by commercial printers of all sizes continues to grow. Printers understand that to remain relevant they must either compete with, or complement, today’s expanding digital channels.

“More commercial printers have incorporated inkjet into their overall print strategy,” stated Jay Abraham, Technical Sales Manager from Domtar. “These training sessions position Mac Papers as the ‘go to’ resource for customers interested in expanding their inkjet production.”

The evolution of papers, inks, and software is starting to keep up with production inkjet equipment technology. Workflow is also evolving at a rapid pace, making it easier to support the growth of inkjet printing.

“As inkjet printing technology evolves, Mac Papers continues to provide the best products and services to our customers. And through ongoing training and education of our sales force, we remain an industry leader for value-added solutions,” said Scott Riley, director of digital papers and media for Mac Papers. “We are grateful to have partners like Domtar and Canon as new print technology comes to market in 2018 and beyond.”

Keeping an Eye on Packaging Return on Investment (ROI)

The experts at Mac Papers are well versed on the many shipping-related factors that can impact your bottom line, from package design and assembly to inventory management and DIM weight considerations. We’ve pulled together a short list to help you keep an eye on ROI.

  • Right-size primary packaging – Is wasted space costing you? A small change to primary packaging can ensure you use the correct size packaging which in turn will reduce waste and lower your shipping costs.
  • Maximize your secondary packaging – Redesigning secondary packaging can also improve ROI. Consider whether you can you ship more product on fewer pallets by safely redesigning the case size to add another layer of product to each pallet.
  • Save time and money through automation – While manually assembling 2,500 cases a day would take two people nearly 14 hours non-stop, an automatic case sealer taping a modest 10 boxes per minute can accomplish the same result in only four hours.
  • Understand DIM weight – Since many carriers apply dimensional (DIM) weight pricing to ground shipments, reducing package dimensions or volume while ensuring adequate protection of contents is essential.
  • Manage your inventory – Effectively managing inventory will allow you to free up warehouse space, redeploy labor resources and lower overall business expenses.

“Our experienced packaging professionals are adept at helping businesses navigate all of the factors listed above,” said Chris McCabe, vice president of packaging at Mac Papers. “By surveying your operation, we can locate the trouble spots, identify opportunities and develop solutions customized to your needs, from packaging materials to equipment.”
